Olympics: Are Kiwis Blair Tuke and Pete Burling the two best sailors on the planet?

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

SAN FRANCISCO (#1194) – After winning 49er Class gold today at the Olympic Test Event (aka "Ready Steady Tokyo") in Enoshima and gold at the 49er Europeans earlier this year, Messers Burling and Tuke appear to be back on track to win gold at next summer's Olympic regatta. All the while preparing for the 2021 America's Cup with Emirates Team NZ.

49er silver at Weymouth in 2012, gold at Rio in 2016, the America's Cup for ETNZ at Bermuda in 2017, then both did a lap around the planet in the 2017-18 VOR — as crew on different boats, albeit neither winners. Now Burling and Tuke have picked up where they left off in the Olympic 49er Class.

If they are not the two best sailors on the planet, who's better?

Bravo Zulu Blair and Pete. Bravo Zulu.

P.S. If you were wondering why the Olympic Test event was called "Ready Steady Tokyo," don't blame World Sailing for that mad marketing moniker. The 2020 Tokyo Organizing Committee mandated "RST" for all test events regardless of sport.

Blair Tuke and Peter Burling (NZL) in Enoshima, JPN today after winning the Olympic Test Event in the 49er Class. The best sailors on the planet today? if not, who's better?
