VOR: AkzoNobel tears mainsail track off mast during a gybe in 35kts; headsails only for the remainin

EN ROUTE CAPE TOWN TO MELBOURNE – AkzoNobel has informed Volvo Ocean Race headquarters by email that the mainsail luff track ripped off the backside of the mast today during a gybe in 35kts of breeze and rough seas that the seven-boat fleet is experiencing as a strong depression (low pressure weather system) roars through the Southern Ocean. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. AkzoNobel are continuing to race under headsails only, with 4200 miles remaining on Leg 3 of the 11 Leg 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race. Full report. Meanwhile Dongfeng and MAPFRE continue to duke it out for the lead.

DTL = distance to leader in nautical miles.

Superb photo by AkzoNobel's OBR (onboard reporter), almost looks like a painting.
