C.Ray: Another day on SF Bay

THERE ARE A NUMBER of noted and celebrated international yachting photographers – Italy's Carlo Borlenghi, Daniel Forster (SUI/USA, a.k.a. the "Clockmaker" because of his Swiss heritage), Sharon Greene (USA, Santa Barbara) and Gilles Martin-Raget (FRA) to name just four who also happen to be longtime friends. The late, great Bobby Greiser (USA, San Diego) was on that plane before he moved to another, higher one earlier this year.

But for one reason or another, perhaps because our sport is so inherently photogenic, there are many more superb snappers all over the world, most of whom operate primarily in their home ports, whether professionally or as a serious hobby. NYYC's Dan Nerney (Newport, RI) is one who has supplied the Club, and world, with amazing photos for decades. In the other Newport (as Californians call Newport Beach) there are Mary Longpre and Tom Walker. The list goes on and on.

Chris Ray is a good friend and esteemed Bay Area sailing photographer who shoots mostly events at St. Francis Yacht Club. Another Michigan boy who early on saw the California light, "C.Ray" as he is widely known – in part because his father founded the SeaRay boat company – is sharing with SAILING ILLUSTRATED some of his favorite photos from years gone by on iconically beautiful, reliably windy San Francisco Bay. (The SI photo of the J/105 on the rocks was his, and it became an instant hit with our readers. Hence this new regular feature we will call "C.Ray: Another day on San Francisco Bay."
