Rolex Big Boat Series: Peter Stoneberg's SHADOW X dismasted - updated

Thursday, September 14, 2017

UPDATE, 1845 THURSDAY – We spoke tonight with Commodore Stoneberg, who confirmed that, thank goodness, everyone was okay. Contrary to reports in the StFYC bar this evening, SHADOW X did not capsize. They broke a shroud, not the mast. The sails are all fine, the mast is intact, and the only other apparent damage was a broken headsail strut. Nonetheless, SHADOW X won't be back out on the water for the balance of the RBBS, so we can safely say that over the ORION, Tom Siebel's MOD 70, will race around the course alone and win the BAMA division.

SAN FRANCISCO – A few minutes ago during Day One of St Francis Yacht Club's Rolex Big Boat Series, StFYC Staff Commodore Peter Stoneberg's Extreme 40 SHADOW X was dismasted in the central bay with breeze in the low 20s. Your Ed. hears that, thankfully, no one was hurt, but sadly that is likely the end of the 2017 RBBS for Commodore Stoneberg and his team. Doubly sad because there is only one other boat in the BAMA (multihull) division, Tom Siebel's MOD 70 ORION, which won today's first race. Karl Kwok's BEAU GESTE won the first race in the Pac52 Class. Full results (all divisions) here.

We'll have more tonight. Photo below courtesy of StFYC's Chris Ray.
